We are very fortunate to have a great group of dedicated, passionate instructors here at Bikram Yoga Perth. Each of our instructors have completed the Bikram Yoga Teacher Training program and immersed themselves in an in-depth study of Bikram Yoga with Yoga Masters Bikram and Rajashree Choudhury and their staff of senior teachers.
I am the co-owner of Bikram Yoga Perth and South with my wife Jen. I spent much of my youth battling severe sporting injuries including operations to my ankles, knees and hip. It wasn't until I dislocated both shoulders at the age of 24 that I decided enough was enough.
Originally from Perth, I had been running my own business as a massage therapist for th epast 8 years when I knew I needed to search fro something new. Although I helped in the rehabilitation of many clients from injuries, I was frustrated at the increasing amount of people I had coming in with general aches and pains.
I tried my first Bikram yoga class in 2006 after seeing an advertisement in the local paper. It sounded interesting and I'd done other form of yoga, so I deaded down to my local studio in Melbourne to give this 'hot yoga' a go.
I tried to leave the room after about ten minutes! I was encouraged to stay and thanked the teacher afterwards as I then went on to do 300 classes in my first year of practice.
If you were to tell me 5 years ago when I first moved to Australia (from New Zealand) that I would be standing up on a podium teaching yoga to a room full of yogis, I would have laughed, shaken my head and thought you were crazy!
Everyone remembers their first Bikram class, mine was in Singapore whilst working as a flight attendant. It was my intention to do a little stretching after herniating a disk.
Having studied Philosophy and Psychology at Murdoch University and having played Bass in Bands since I was fourteen...I embarked on a career as a chef and worked at Rockpool Restaurant in Sydney. My ethos was 'work hard and party even harder!' I lived a life of excess and I found myself at the age of 27 being burnt out physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
I am originally from Tucson, AZ, USA but I didn't start my practice until a friend brought me along, whil I was living in Dallas, TX. At the time, I was suffering from plantar fasciitis, which was preventing me from participating in my normal high impact activities. I was also 5' 2-1/2", which was half an inch less than my normal height. I can honestly say that Bikram Yoga is the toughest activity I have ever done.
I am not a naturally flexible person! In fact I started early life like a lump of concrete. At age 23 I was a complete mess. I had a damaged disc, a curvature of the spine, as well as a nervous condition and to top it off, the furthest I could bend forward was to my knees. To touch my toes just seemed impossible. I had to do something.
I remember leaving the studio after my first class feeling like I was flying... or had I just been steamrolled? I couldn't tell. Whichever it was, i was hooked.
When I walked into my first Bikram Yoga Class in Santa Cruz, CA in 2005 I had no idea how much my life was about to be changed. I had a beat up body from years of competitive snowboarding was 18Kilos overweight and stiff as a board. I don't remember much of the first class except all the instructions flying at me, sweating my brains out and seeing all these people make it look easy.
